Helping Hands - Moving after the sale

Moving is a big job. There is a lot to get done, and often very little time to do it. It helps when all members of the family pitch in and lend a hand. All children, from toddlers to teenagers, can share in the effort.

  • Young children – Preschool-age and kindergarten children can help you pack their belongings. This includes things like stuffed animals, small toys, books and games. It is a good idea to oversee their efforts and check each box before it is sealed.
  • Grade school – School-aged kids can be given even greater responsibilities. Ask them to help you with bigger projects, like packing clothes or closets.
  • Teens – High-school kids can be assigned jobs like boxing up their rooms, but with this age group it is a good idea to put a timeframe on the chores. Teens can also be recruited for helping with more taxing jobs, like packing the garage or basement.
  • When children lend a hand with the move preparations, it not only lightens the work load, it helps them feel more invested in the move. Time spent packing together can also be a good opportunity to ask how they are feeling about the change.

But no matter the age of the child, always be sure to thank them and tell them how much you appreciate their support. Just like adults, children want to be recognized for their efforts. And to reinforce your message, plan a fun family event for after the move as a thank you for their hard work.
